Performance of Geosynthetic Reinforced Shallow Foundations

In general, a shallow foundation is preferred unless the structure and the ground demand for deep foundation. With the recent advancements in the reinforced soil technologies, the reinforced shallow foundations have emerged as a simple alternative for a sustainable competent support, instead of complicated deep foundations. Different forms of geosynthetics are used as soil reinforcements like strip, planar and the three-dimensional geocells. This paper briefly presents selected recent developments in the studies on the performance of geosynthetic reinforced shallow foundations in line with advancing the technology. It has been noticed that reinforcements can improve the foundation performance depending on footing settlement, layer thickness and subgrade strength. The improvement in bearing capacity ranged between 2 and 12 times compared to corresponding homogeneous/unreinforced configurations depending on subgrade strength and other parameters. The bearing pressures were increased from 30 kPa to 380 kPa and 245 kPa to 560 kPa, respectively, for subgrade strength of 7 kPa and 60 kPa, on a surface foundation reinforced with geocell–geogrid combined reinforcement system.
